This internship combines academic learning with hands-on experience in a grassroots organisation dedicated to empowering displaced people — including asylum seekers, undocumented individuals, and refugees — through sport.
As an intern, you will contribute to project-based work while actively engaging with a diverse community. Your role will also include participation in outreach initiatives, support in gym activities when needed, and involvement in the organisation of community and fundraising events.
Interns at YSR play a key role in shaping the organisation’s future. You will collaborate closely with fellow interns, staff, and your assigned coordinator to develop ongoing projects and explore new partnerships. We are looking for proactive, motivated, and organised individuals with strong communication and time-management skills, and a genuine passion for empowerment through sport.
## **About the Swimming Project**
The **Swimming Project in Lesvos** provides people on the move with the opportunity to learn and practice swimming in a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment. The programme offers:
- Women-only classes
- Mixed-group classes
All sessions are conducted with sensitivity and respect, recognising that many participants have experienced difficult and dangerous journeys by sea. The project promotes physical health, confidence, and community, while fostering trust, dignity, and wellbeing.
Swimming in this context goes beyond technique — it becomes a tool for healing, empowerment, and connection.
## **Internship Overview**
From **early June to early September**, we are seeking **lifeguards, professional swimmers, and swimming instructors** to join our team on Lesvos.
As part of the programme, you will:
- Support and facilitate swimming sessions
- Ensure safe and well-organised activities
- Collaborate with an international and multicultural team
This is an opportunity to contribute to a meaningful project where sport serves a greater social purpose.
## **Key Responsibilities**
### **Swimming Session Facilitation**
- Lead and support swimming classes for both women-only and mixed groups
- Ensure a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment
### **Instructor Support & Coordination**
- Assist and supervise other instructors
- Share effective teaching practices adapted to vulnerable populations
### **Equipment Management**
- Maintain and monitor swimming and safety equipment
- Ensure all materials are safe, functional, and available
### **Lesson Planning & Methodology**
- Design and implement appropriate swimming exercises
- Apply best practices for participants with physical or emotional vulnerabilities
### **Participant Engagement & Wellbeing**
- Encourage participation, confidence, and enjoyment
- Monitor and support participants’ physical and emotional safety
### **Administrative Support**
- Assist with scheduling, logistics, and reporting
- Track attendance and participant progress
**What We’re Looking For**
- Experience as a lifeguard, swimming instructor, or professional swimmer (experience with adults is an asset)
- Knowledge or experience related to water trauma is a plus
- Minimum age: 21
- Availability for at least 3 months
- Fluency in English (spoken and written)
### **Skills & Competencies**
- Strong organisational and time-management skills
- Ability to work independently and within a team
- Experience in NGOs (preferred)
- Basic administrative experience
- Good computer skills, including Google tools
### **Personal Qualities**
- Passion for sport and human rights
- Interest in event organisation
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Flexibility, adaptability, and willingness to learn
- Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
